Linacre Library

SOLO is the search tool or catalogue for the major collections of Oxford University’s libraries.

Linacre College has a multi-disciplinary library collection and this can be searched on SOLO by selecting ‘Linacre College Library’ in the drop-down box to the right of the main search bar. Sign in using your College ‘single sign-on’ to gain access to the expanding collection of eBooks and online resources.

Linacre College Library houses the special collection of Gilbert Ryle in the Ryle Reading Room located in the main library.

Philosopher, Gilbert Ryle, was a senior member of the original Linacre House and, concerned that the new institution was lacking a library, donated many of his own books. After his death in 1976, there was a further bequest of his papers including letters and miscellaneous notes extracted from the volumes in his library.

All the books are catalogued on the University’s main catalogue SOLO excluding his papers.

Linacre College Library is committed to making the Gilbert Ryle collection as accessible as possible. Reference access to the collection is available to members of the college, other college and University of Oxford members and external academic researchers.

All appointments to consult special collections material must please be made in advance by contacting the Library Team.

Readers will need to provide photographic identification and complete a Research Registration Form on arrival.

The Library Study Room is bookable at this link for Linacre students and fellows. It is for group study and can be reserved for a maximum of two hours up to two weeks in advance.

Book purchases are made in accordance to the Linacre Library Collection Policy. We welcome suggestions from Linacre members so please email the Library Team with any recommendations.
